TRAVEL INSURANCE
QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

Travel insurance is an essential part of protecting your trip investment and your well‑being while traveling. Policies vary widely, so understanding what’s covered—and what isn’t—helps you make confident, informed decisions. The simple, at-a-glance overview below was designed to help you understand the most important parts of travel insurance before you book your next trip or cruise.

WHAT TRAVEL INSURANCE COVERS

Travel insurance protects you from specific losses after specific events — not every reason.

Standard policies cover:

  • Serious illness or injury

  • Death in the immediate family

  • Other listed unforeseen emergencies

Important: Cruise itinerary changes are not considered cancellations.

CANCEL FOR ANY REASON (CFAR)

CFAR offers flexibility but comes with rules.

Key points:

  • Must be purchased within days of your first payment

  • Reimburses 50–75% of trip cost

  • Requires cancellation before a policy deadline

  • Usually more expensive

Best for: Travelers who want maximum flexibility.

TRIP INTERRUPTIONS & WEATHER

  • If you must leave your trip early due to a covered emergency, interruption benefits may reimburse unused portions and extra travel costs.

  • Weather‑related itinerary changes on cruises usually do not qualify for reimbursement if the cruise still operates.

  • Policies purchased after a storm is named will likely not cover that storm.

MEDICAL COVERAGE ABROAD

Your regular health insurance may not fully cover you outside your home country.

Check your policy for:

  • Emergency medical limit

  • Medical evacuation limit

  • Primary vs. secondary coverage

  • How payments are handled internationally

Medicare: Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the U.S.

CREDIT CARD TRAVEL INSURANCE

Some travel credit cards include:

  • Trip cancellation

  • Trip delay

  • Lost luggage

But: Coverage varies widely. “Travel & Emergency Assistance” is coordination only — not payment.

WHEN TO PURCHASE TRAVEL INSURANCE

Best time: Within 14 days of your initial trip deposit.

Buying early unlocks:

  • CFAR eligibility

  • Pre‑existing condition waivers

  • Maximum coverage options

You can still buy up to the day before departure for:

  • Emergency medical

  • Evacuation

  • Trip interruption

  • Baggage issues

  • Travel delays

CRUISE TRAVEL INSURANCE

Cruise Line Insurance

Cruise line policies are convenient but usually limited to cruise‑related issues. They often do not cover:

  • Flights

  • Hotels

  • Pre‑ or post‑cruise travel

  • Independently booked excursions

CFAR options through cruise lines typically reimburse in future cruise credit, not cash.

Pros:

  • Easy and convenient

  • Covers cruise‑specific issues

Cons:

  • Limited medical coverage

  • CFAR often gives future cruise credit, not cash

  • Does not cover flights, hotels, or independent excursions

Third‑Party Insurance

Third‑party policies offer broader protection and allow you to insure your entire trip:

  • Cruise fare

  • Flights

  • Hotels

  • Transfers

  • Independent tours

They also provide higher medical and evacuation limits and more flexible CFAR options. While they may cost more upfront, they often deliver significantly better value and peace of mind.

Pros:

  • Covers your entire trip

  • Higher medical & evacuation limits

  • More flexible CFAR options

  • Direct claims with the insurer

Cons:

  • Requires research

  • May cost more upfront

  • Pre‑existing conditions may require early purchase
